What A Load of Contradictions

I meet Pepper post her stint at The Communications Store like Samson and Nora, Pepper is running her fashion life (from Birmingham) which she'll be sharing with Style Canteen. Starting with a quick review of .Cent Magazine guest Editor Micheal Herz..

Life is full of many contradictions some good, some bad and the rest inevitable. The Michael Herz issue, ‘Contradictions’ is the theme he chose to explore as guest editor for the .Cent Magazine A/W09 issue.

Michael Herz is the head of menswear and womenswear design for Aquascutum, the legendary British fashion brand. I guess his title is just as intimidating as Aquascutum’s head office building Jo Phillips, the editor of .Cent remarks of. However, any intimidations soon fade away as Herz invites us on his journey of life’s contradictions. Apart from the front cover immediately hitting you with a contradiction, baring a striking image of a European model’s face with a white, ‘tribal’ mark.

The contradictions in art and creation are mashed up a little for instance, the ‘Hiding Behind My Face’ looks at mood altering make up, how it can put a spring in your step to the original, symbolic meaning behind make-up and what it signifies.. deep!

Thinking Outside the Box’ is visually challenging but tres inspirational as Herz presents us with a selection of architects who contradict the everyday perception of what a home should be. The issues as a whole gives a real sense of Herz’s personality, he begins each topic written in-depth and with great insight by his guest writers with a small abstract, which I think works as a sort of compass to the contradictions that have shaped his life and creativity and that we can all relate to.
